Learn to be a Travel Writer — in Paradise

Daku Resort
Ever thought of becoming a travel writer?

If so, you can learn how to get started at a course I will teach in September 2010 at Daku Resort, a small, low-key establishment in Savusavu, on Vanua Levu Island in northern Fiji.

Daku is owned by John and Delia Rothnie-Jones, who host courses on a variety of subjects. Go to Paradise Courses for information about all their offerings, including mine.

My travel writing course runs from September 12 to September 19, 2010, and costs US$2,100 per person, including domestic flights from Nadi to and from Savusavu, accommodation, meals, excursions, and airport transfers. You'll have to arrange your own flights to and from Fiji. Los Angeles-Nadi fares on Air Pacific. have been running about US$1,200, much less from Australia and New Zealand.

After learning what makes a good travel writer and good travel writing during morning workshops, you will be free each afternoon to explore Savusavu in search of ideas and stories about the geography, culture, sociology, anthropology, religion, cuisine, language, history, and all other aspects of this fascinating area.

The morning sessions also will focus on the practicalities of travel writing, such as how to get started, how to research a destination before going, what to look or while you are there, how to develop “slants” for your articles, and how to pitch your ideas to editors, both in print and on the Worldwide Web.

At the end of each day you can read your writings and get feedback both from me and from your fellow classmates over drinks. You can present your major article on the final day for review and critique.

My Review of Daku Resort

Here is my review of Daku Resort in the first edition of Frommer's Fiji:

Daku Resort This former church camp is now owned by John ("J.J.") and Delia Rothnie-Jones, who renovated all of its accommodations. They also use it as a base for a variety of educational courses such as creative writing, quilting, birdwatching, sketching, and gospel singing (see their Website for more). The tin-roof accommodations, main building with restaurant and bar, and outdoor pool sit in a lawn across Lesiaceva Point Road from a small beach. Ranging from hotel rooms to 3-bedroom houses, the units are simple but clean and comfortable. Two "lodge" rooms share hot-water showers; all other units have their own bathrooms, some with outdoor showers. Savusavu town is a 25-minute walk from here.

P.O. Box 18, Savusavu (Lesiaceva Point Rd., 2km/1¼ mile west of town).  885 0046. Fax 885 0334. www.dakuresort.com. 19 units (18 w/bathroom). F$95–F$250 double. AE, MC, V. Amenities: Restaurant; bar; outdoor pool; complementary kayaks, canoes and snorkel gear; wireless Internet access; babysitting; laundry service. In room: A/C (2 units), fridge, coffeemaker.
